Education:
Most of my education happened in Poland. I went to primary and middle school in my village, then for high school I was commuting to a nearby town. Finally after that I was studying for 7 years in Krakow at the AGH University of Science and Technology. Last year I got a master degree at the University of Leeds in England.

Qualifications:
2010 – finished high school in Tarnow, Poland
2014 – BSc in Geophysics, AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland
2015 – MSc in Applied Geophysics, AGH UST, Krakow
2019 – MSc in Exploration Geophysics, University of Leeds, UK -
Work History:
I started with picking of blueberries when I was 18. But I was doing it only for 2 weeks. Then I was a waitress in a pizzeria for few summers in a row. During my time at the university I had an internship in a Copper Mine and then in state oil and gas company in Poland. In the meantime I also worked few about 2 months in the museum of contemporary art as a visitors’ service, but it wasn’t my piece of bread. After I finished my studies I stayed at the university for a doctorate, because at that time it was very hard to find a job as a geophysicist. But I didn’t give up and after some time I finally got a part-time job in a geophysical company while still doing my PhD. The company got closed and I lost my job. I didn’t really want to do a PhD, so when I got offered a quite relevant job abroad in Prague and I took my chance. I ended up as a seismologist and was dealing with earthquakes. Sounds cool, but actually was very boring, so I decided to quit it and move to England. I did one year master degree in Leeds and straight after that I got a job in the best geophysical contractor in the world! Dream finally came true.

Current Job:
I am working for CGG Services in Crawley. It is a French company with many offices all over the world. We do mostly geophysical exploration for the clients from the energy sector.

About Me:
A curious human being who learned how to use physics to see what’s underground. Also a 28-yo geophysicist from Poland living in beautiful Crawley, working for energy industry.

Hello! Friends call me Gosia. Please do not try to say my full name unless you want to break your tongue 🙂 I originally come from Poland and currently I live in Crawley, West Sussex together with my boyfriend and his piano. In my free time I love to paint or draw. Recently I got myself into colouring, which is extremely relaxing, especially after work. I love nature, hiking, cycling, walking around. My biggest dream is to visit Patagonia. I have even been learning Spanish specially for that! However the hardest part will be getting fit and ready to do 5 days of trekking.
I am a cat person and I would love to adopt a cat when I move to a bigger house someday in a future. My favourite cat lives with my mum and she is already 16 years old (the cat, not my mum)!

Geophysics is having an extra sense to see things that you cannot see with your own eyes. The sense is understanding of physics laws 🙂 In my work I use seismic waves generated by humans on the surface in form of micro-earthquakes. The waves travel down across the Earth bouncing off prehistoric geological structures. When the waves come back to the surface we can register them using special microphones (called geophones or hydrophones). Those waves can tell us where the energy resources are located. Thanks to them we are able to find oil, gas, coal, geothermal sites, places to store CO2 and much more.
My part of the job is to remove the noise and shape the recorded data (waves) in such way to create a beautiful image of the underground. On the images I look for prehistoric rivers, mountains, canyons, volcanoes or coral reefs. They are often buried miles under the surface of the Earth.
Another use of geophysics, which I did more at the university is archaeology. With ground penetrating radar (it sends and measures electromagnetic waves), gravimeter (measures gravity force) or magnetometer (measures magnetism) it is possible to find ancient ruins, settlements and treasures, which were buried underground!

My Typical Day:
On typical day I go to the office, where I meet with my friends and colleagues and together we try to improve the images of Earth’s underground. It includes a lot of problem solving, team discussions and patience. We’ve got some huge screens and super fast computers to help us.
