It’s really exciting! I’m studying for a PhD at the moment which means I have to research something that hasn’t been done before. Even though my research is only on a very specific area of physics I think it is really exciting to know that I’m helping to extend human knowledge a tiny bit!
Definitely! Finding out new things and then more new things is great, particularly when you have an idea that no one has come up with!
Sometimes though, when you are working on your own, you can get lost in the details, and feel a bit lonely working on something new. That is when it is great to go to scientific meetings (conferences), where you talk with others and discuss ideas. I always come back with a buzz and full of new things to try!
It is! And we actively pursue the finding out part: weekly seminars, journal clubs (where we read scientific papers and discuss them), conferences (big ones 1-2 times a year, smaller and local ones more often).
Keeping up to date with one’s field of research is essential! And knowing what’s going in on in a fringing field is very good for getting new ideas and maybe even finding new people to work with. Modern science would not be possible without communication.
