You are correct that the Universe can be a scary place, but it is also a very beautiful one. Luckily for us the Sun is too small to explode as a supernova, instead turning into a red giant many millions of years from now so poses no imminent threat (lucky for us!). There are other phenomena with an example being gamma-ray bursts which are short-lived bursts of gamma-ray light. These can last anywhere from a few milliseconds to several minutes, and shine hundreds of times brighter than a typical supernova and about a million, trillion times as bright as the Sun. When a gamma ray burst erupts, it is briefly the brightest source of cosmic gamma-ray photons in the observable Universe. If one of these was pointed in Earth’s direction it would be catastrophic but luckily none of the known candidates are close enough or oriented in our direction. There are other risks such as asteroids, but I am personally more concerned about dangers here on Earth such as climate change and denial of science as opposed to Universal dangers.
All the time. We are just so insignificant compared to the size of the Earth, and then the Earth compared to the Sun, and then the Sun compared to monster stars like Belegeuse… etc etc. The universe could throw any number of horrifying things our way and yes it is terrifying. Luckily, our Sun is very stable and mostly harmless, as is our local area of the universe, so we’re probably ok 🙂
