Yes, I have. I almost did molecular biology at university – decided against because some of the experiments looked quite fiddly and my hand-eye coordination is not great (one of the reasons I did not consider medicine – you really would not want me sewing up something crucial in your insides!) – and given all that has happened in molecular biology in the last half century I do wonder if that was the right decision. Likewise, I almost did cosmology rather than particle physics for my PhD, and that’s another areas which has been revolutionised since the 1980s. But, on the whole, I’m retty satisfied with what I chose: I got to live in some interesting places and work with some fantastic people.
All the time! I never actually knew what I wanted to study and I’ve always just gone with the flow. But I have been happy with my choices in the long run even if I doubt myself in present.
