Work History:
Tesco Store Assistant (yr10 work experience – 2 weeks)
Cleaner at my Sixth Form College (2yrs part-time)
Teaching Assistant (summer job 1st year uni)
Research Assistant (summer job 2nd year uni)After completing University, I worked for a large electronic manufacturing company testing products which are used in over 90% of the world’s radiotherapy machines. I stayed at this company for over 4 years, learning various aspects of RF engineering and how to deliver successful R&D projects, examples include high power RF components for cargo and vehicle inspection, to designing a laser experiment to test a miniature atomic clock.
In my current role, I’m developing the next generation of electronically steered antennas, which can send and receive radio waves from satellites in space whizzing around Earth, so that you can watch Netflix on a plane, or even play Fortnite on a train…

Current Job:
Head of System Test
I am responsible for a team of engineers who test our prototype products to make sure they are working as we expect, and we use complex maths to improve how they work. I work with the team to set tasks and ensure we meet our deadlines.

In most engineering or science related jobs we go through a cycle of plan, do and review.
PLAN – agreeing what you will do for the day/week/next few months, as you get more senior in your career this takes up more of your time.
DO – this is the fun bit which includes testing, meeting customers or people who might use your products. In my role I do alot this, my team is responsible for ensuring that our prototype antennas work and if not understanding why. It requires a curious mind, patience and a good team spirit.
REVIEW – generally this involves analysing data from the tests you have taken, updating plans etc.
I have included a few pictures below to highlight things which I have worked on.
-
My Typical Day:
Arrive at work by 7.30am, have coffee and plan the day. Discuss plans with my team, run some tests in an anechoic chamber (a cool room where you can’t get any phone signal), and analyse all my data!

Each day is completely different.
- But typically, I have a meeting with my team in the morning to plan our tasks for the day and review any challenges.
- This is normally followed by a refreshing cup of coffee, before I do some hardware testing in the lab and analyse data.
- Over lunch a group of us catch up on our progress and normally discuss random topics such as sci-fi movies, 3D printers making other 3D printers or even how to get drones to deliver our coffee to our desk in the office…
- Post lunch I normally continue writing reports, testing and supporting other teams to meet our project milestones.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would start a blog and perhaps a Youtube channel to share things which I do in my job, and talk about things which I have learnt since leaving school. I think this would be useful for school kids to learn more about STEM subjects and inspire them to take a career in this direction.
