I am a 33 year old History and Politics and Middle East Politics graduate from Swindon. I have a passion for social science and science in general. I previously worked at the Economic and Social Research Council for 7 years in the areas of big data, business studies, transport and the charity sector. I now work in physics funding.
I was delighted for an expanded version of my Masters thesis to be published in 2010 (available on Amazon if anyone is interested)
I am passionate about contributing to my local area and have been trustee of 3 charities.
In my spare, non lockdown, time I am a big fan of cricket – both watching and playing, I enjoy live music, comedy and theatre and also going to the cinema. I am a beer drinker and spend a lot of my time sampling new brews and going to festivals and tours. I am also a massive foody and can’t go too long without eating!

I am the Projects Peer Review Panel Secretary at the Science and Technology Facilities Council. My job involves managing a busy panel of academic experts who assess large or complex research proposals for public funding.
Due to all the exciting ideas which academics have this Panel keeps me very busy, meeting 5 times a year, often for 2 or 3 days a time.
The Panel considers 6 academic areas:
- Nuclear Physics
- Particle Physics
- Particle Astrophysics
- Astronomy
- Accelerator Physics
- Computing
-
My Typical Day:
My day-to-day work involves liaising with academics and organising a process of reviewing grant proposals. As part of this I have to read through proposals and select relevant experts to assess them. I also write lengthy reports as a record of the scientific discussions.

In pre-COVID days I worked in a crowded open plan office in Swindon in a building which hosts 7 other Research Councils and the UK Space Agency. A large part of this also involved visiting laboratory sites and Universities around the UK. This is mainly for meetings where the Panel reviews grant proposals but also includes tour of facilities – I’ve included pictures of a number of examples.
