I went to Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar school for secondary school; in Kent about half of the state schools are grammars.
For university I went to Durham. I am also presently doing a postgraduate qualification at Manchester University.

Work History:
I’ve done quite a bit of work experience to figure out what I wanted to do and to help me get into university. Listed, in the order that I did it, I completed work experience at Pfizer’s, Alere, Kent University and EDF. I did these between year 10 and 13. Pfizer’s is a pharmaceutical company I looked at how drugs change in the environment, for example on contact with water. Alere distribute medical equipment, its quite a small company so I got to look at everything from marketing to finance. At Kent University I also looked at pharmaceuticals; specifically if nanoparticles, tiny particles, could carry drugs to the brain through the blood brain barrier. EDF is a nuclear power company and I worked in their material science department, looking at how to repair a fracture in the boiler spine.
At university I completed two summer internships, summer jobs, at P2i. This is a company that uses plasma (the fourth state of matter found in the sun and lightning) to waterproof phones. They are actually going to waterproof Samsung’s next Galaxy phone. This work was largely experimental, running the plasma process to coat the phones and test to see whether they survived handling and submersion in water.
Since graduating I have worked as a Rolls-Royce sponsored nucleargraduate.

I’m a graduate, I live in a house with 5 other graduates in Derby. I rock climb with one of them, even though I am terrified of heights. I also play badminton (famously the sport for the not sporty). I love travelling, historic fiction and Jane Austen novels, and I am obsessed with musicals. I know all of the words of Les Miserables, Wicked and am in the process of learning Hamiliton, just from listening to them so many times (I’m so close but the raps rather fast).

I am a graduate so I rotate roles, that I get to choose, every 4-8 months. I have been a chemistry technologist, which means that I modelled the chemistry of a nuclear power plant to be able to predict the breakdown materials in the plant in different conditions over time. This helps us to keep the plant safe.
I am presently a thermal hydraulics analyst, which means that I work with software and experiments to ensure that the nuclear reactor remains cool. A very important event as overheating is a cause of nuclear accidents.
Next I will be working as a technical policy advisor, offering advice to ministers in government on nuclear innovation and how they can help with its development. They are looking into whether nuclear can fulfil the clean energy gap via innovation giving time for renewable to be developed further.

My Typical Day:
I get up and go straight to work, I’m not what you would call a morning person. I normally start the morning answering emails. I spend the bulk of my day working through a main project with some time taken up with more urgent work. These projects vary from coding to organising events.

I normally start the morning answering emails. I spend the bulk of my day working through a main project with some time taken up with more urgent work. My last project was modelling the chemistry in the reactor, ignoring nuclear effects, to test against experimental results. We were hoping to verify a modelling technique.
I attend meetings discussing other peoples work so we are all kept up to date on work in the department. I also spend quite a lot of time researching roles to rotate to and discussing them with others, having the choice is excellent but making the choice and arranging the role takes time. I can similarly choose to attend conferences or training courses I find interesting.

My Interview
-
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Curious, hardworking and (relatively) social.
What did you want to be after you left school?
I honestly had no idea.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Not really, I got told off a few times for having an inappropriate uniform but everyone at my school did that.
Who is your favourite singer or band?
For normal artists probably Lady Gaga, P!nk or Bastille. For musicals all of them but they don’t normally count.
What's your favourite food?
Pizza, it is just amazing. Though I did eat it for 4 days in a row once and decided I couldn’t actually live on it forever after all.
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
To travel to every country in the world. To actually be able to sing (my siblings have confirmed that I am tone deaf). To be able to teleport or for planes to be cheaper and produce no carbon dioxide, either of which would help my goal to travel.
Tell us a joke.
What do you call a cheese that is not yours? Nacho cheese!
