I think the most interesting thing is when you discover something new!

Usually, there are quite a few stages (of frustration and anger) before that, when you are stuck or there seems to be a dead-end on what you’re doing, but when you finally manage to overcome all the difficutlies, all the “bad” feelings get away.

You have discovered something totally new about how things work 🙂
As an astronomer (although I develop computer models more than I work with real data), the absolute most exciting thing is seeing a new image of something that only a handful of other people have seen before. I’ve had the priviledge of seeing stunning pictures taken with one of the world’s most powerful telescopes of dusty gas discs around a young stars. I get to see images of planets and stars being born- that’s not only exciting but fills us with awe and wonder too.
