I wouldn’t use the word “weird” but I have been involved in a few studies and treatments for people with rare diseases. For instance, we recently scanned some patients to help test out a new drug that has been shown to help patients who have an ultra-rare genetic disorder where their muscle and tissue are gradually replaced by bone. I’ve also given treatments to patients who have a rare type of cancer called neuroendocrine tumours.
The nice thing about nuclear medicine is that we have ways of imaging and treating lots of different diseases by administering different types of radioactive drugs to patients, and there is always research going on to come up with new imaging markers and treatments for other diseases.
