Good morning AbbieR, actually my current research project is to measure how the mixing of the different layers of the Arctic Ocean has changed in the last 3 decades and if this is having an impact on the phytoplankton at the base of Arctic food webs. Phytoplankton do photosynthesize but can’t really be classed as plants as many of them make exoskeletons. So while I am not studying the more widely-recognized animals like polar bears, whales or fish, we are looking at the processes that provides food for all these creatures. This project is a wonderful example of interdisciplinary marine science where physics, chemistry and biology all come together.
