Education:
Early education:
I went to a Church of England primary school in a small village in the South of England, a secondary school that wasn’t very good at the time, then I went to a 6th form college near my hometown which has since closed down. While at school I really enjoyed learning about science and technology, my favourite classes were always Science or Design and Tech. I enjoyed building things and solving problems. I also really enjoyed History and English as I loved listening to stories. At college I studied, Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Economics.
I actually had quite a difficult time at school, so I had to a tutor for help in Mathematics so that I could achieve higher grades. For a long time I was in the lower set and had to work hard to improve my grades. I also used to get in trouble sometimes.
I took a gap year before university, where I worked in a clothes shop. I knew that I wanted to study for a long time as I wanted to do science, so I decided to take a break before going back to education. I really enjoyed working and it taught me a lot about management and communication.
Higher education:
For my undergraduate degree I went to Royal Holloway University of London
For my Masters I attended University College London
At university I studied Physics and Astrophysics. I think I needed 3 A’s to get in and so I was lucky.I participated in a lot of sports and societies while at uni and I was the president of my sports club (Mixed martial arts). I also enjoyed socialising with my friends. I spent a lot of time volunteering outside of class in science communication and tried to get an internship each summer for work experience.
I actually graduate with a 2.2 after having some difficulties during my third year at university and ended up volunteering for a year in a lab to gain research experience that would enable me to pursue my PhD.
For my PhD I went to Northumbria University where I studied the Sun for 3 years and published some scientific papers on the subject. My work was focused on understanding the energy contained in the Sun’s atmosphere.
I discovered during my Masters degree that I was both Dyslexic and Dyspraxic which helped me understand why I found some subjects difficult at school.

I live in London with my friends, I don’t have any pets but wish I could have a cat! I have many hobbies, including martial arts, rock climbing, writing, making music, video games and going to see live music and art exhibitions. I love watching movies and really can quote a lot of The Simpsons. Outside of work when I’m not enjoying my hobbies or spending time with friends, I volunteer as part of a team of science communicators giving talks at schools and museums. I love fried chicken but am trying to eat less meat.

As a scientist I have worked on many different things! I used to be an Astrophysicist where I spent my time trying to understand the the Sun and stars. Here, my work revolved around something we called the ‘heating problem‘. This is something that has puzzled scientists about the Sun for a very long time, and is also likely to be also similar for other stars. In stars energy is created in the core, in the middle. Normally when we move away from a heat source, temperature goes down. Scientists discovered that on the Sun, the atmosphere (million degrees) is hotter than the surface (5000 degrees)! This is the heating problem. My work looked at understanding the heating problem by looking at magnetic energy on the Sun. I worked with very large telescopes on the ground and in space, trying to solve this puzzles with images.
Next, I worked on providing very very careful measurements for different problems (this is called metrology -study of measurement ). This included understanding small differences in X-rays, measuring the growth of crops for farming using cameras and creating models of different materials so we could understand how they worked. Being an Astrophysicist I needed to do some extra learning to understand the science for these new problems. For this I worked with images from lots of different cameras.
More recently, I work with companies developing new technology to support smart cities. This is where we connect the information all around us to discover useful things about our lives. This information is used to monitor things like pollution, predict when buildings are damaged, monitor energy usage, understand traffic or help public transport run faster. In the future this information will be used to help robots and self driving cars make decisions.

My Typical Day:
I like to start my day with tea or coffee after waking up a little late 🙂
At work, we normally begin with a short catch-up of all the interestings things we have been up to and share some new ideas of what we might look at next. I work with very large computers, and so I need many screens to see what i’m working on and can have a lot of different information displayed on them. I will then spend my day exploring the information and trying to solve problems with it. I like to take regular breaks to talk to my friends at work or show each other cool things we’ve found out. I try not to work too late so I can get home to enjoy my hobbies!
