My research includes making things very cold, in doing so, this makes our detector very still. If I can make my detector more still, I can detect black holes colliding in the universe further into space.
I am working to build the world’s first prototype cryogenic single crystalline silicon gravitational wave detector. In order to do this, I work with silicon (the stuff that’s inside your phone and used heavily in electronics) to build a detector and cool it down to around 4 Kelvin (-268 degrees C).
I previously worked in defence, making ships and submarines electromagnetically invisible to aircraft and sea mines.
