I work on dark matter direct detection. The idea behind this is that if there are dark matter particles in the Milkyway we might be able to detect them when they pass through the Earth. One way we can do this, which I work on, is using large volume of liquid xenon buried deep underground. For certain models of dark matter we expect light and charge signals if they pass through the detector.
Most of the time I am based in Edinburgh writing computer code to simulate particles in the detector and analyse data. But the experiment is based in South Dakota, USA and involves scientists from all over the world. So I often travel either to South Dakota or other locations to meet with colleagues.
